Sixty-five miles down I-25. On paper it’s nothing — an hour and change, no state lines, no van line, no weight tickets.
In practice it’s the awkward middle distance. It’s too far to make three trips in your own truck, and too close for the long-distance playbook most moving companies run. A lot of movers price it badly in one direction or the other, and a lot of people end up overpaying because of it.
Here’s how it really works. Starting in Fort Collins?
It’s a local move, priced by the hour
Under about 50 miles, movers bill hourly. Fort Collins to Denver is right around 65 miles, which puts it just past that threshold — but most Front Range companies still handle it on an hourly basis rather than switching to weight-and-mileage pricing. That’s usually better for you.
Expect roughly:
- Small/light local move: $400–$700
- Typical 1–2 bedroom: $600–$1,200
- Typical 2–3 bedroom: $900–$1,800
- Larger 3–4 bedroom: $1,400–$3,000+
Prices can be influenced by the following: inventory/volume, stairs/elevators, walking distance, truck access, crew requirements, packing, specialty items, travel distance and scheduling availability.

The premium over a purely local Fort Collins move comes down to drive time. You’re paying for roughly two and a half hours of round-trip transit on top of the load and unload, and that’s real crew time whether the truck is moving or parked.
If your quote came back priced on weight and mileage like a cross-country move, ask why. For a single-day Front Range relocation, hourly is almost always the better structure and it’s worth getting a second quote.
It’s a one-day move — usually
For anything up to about three bedrooms, a properly sized crew loads in Fort Collins in the morning, drives down midday, and unloads in Denver in the afternoon. One truck, one crew, one day, your stuff sleeps where you sleep.
Four bedrooms and up can spill into a second day, or split into two truckloads. That’s worth knowing before you book, because a two-day move means an overnight where your belongings are on a truck or in a warehouse, and you want to know exactly which and exactly where.
The thing that makes or breaks the day is the I-25 corridor. Southbound between Fort Collins and Denver backs up hard in the morning, and the northbound return in the evening is worse. A crew that leaves Fort Collins at 6 a.m. and a crew that leaves at 9 a.m. are having completely different days, and one of those days is on your invoice. Learn More
Ask your movers what time they plan to roll. If the answer is vague, that’s information.

Denver’s access problems are different from Fort Collins’
You’re trading one set of logistics for another.
Fort Collins side:
wide residential streets in most of the city, easy truck access, straightforward driveways. The exceptions are Old Town’s narrow historic blocks and the permit-restricted zones near CSU. Fort Collins Moves
Denver side:
much more likely to involve a building with a loading dock, a service elevator that has to be reserved, a certificate of insurance the building management wants on file before your crew is allowed in, and a two- or four-hour reserved elevator window that you will absolutely lose if you’re late.
If you’re moving into an apartment or condo anywhere central — Capitol Hill, LoDo, RiNo, Cherry Creek, the Highlands — call building management the week before and ask three questions: Do I need to reserve the freight elevator? Do you need a COI from my movers, and what coverage limits? Where can the truck legally park?
Older Denver neighborhoods add their own version of the Old Town problem: narrow streets, alley-only access, permit zones, and street parking that fills by 8 a.m. Denver Moves Send all of this to your movers when you book. A company that handles Denver regularly will already have a COI template ready.

What to sort before move day
Reserve the elevator.
Say it again. This is the number one cause of Denver move-in delays.
Handle the utilities.
Xcel Energy covers both markets so that transfer is straightforward. Water and trash are municipal and change — Fort Collins Utilities to Denver Water and Denver Solid Waste. Internet is usually the long pole; schedule installation for a few days after you arrive, not the day of.
Update your address and vehicle registration.
You’re changing counties — Larimer to Denver or Arapahoe — which means new plates and different registration fees. Colorado gives you 90 days.
Look at your parking situation honestly.
A lot of Denver housing comes with one space or none. If you’re arriving with two cars and a truck, figure out where they all go before you’re standing in the street with a fully loaded 26-footer.
Why crews on both ends matter
Most companies moving you from Fort Collins to Denver are dispatching a Fort Collins crew that will drive down, unload in a city they don’t work in, and drive back. They’re learning your Denver building on your move.
The alternative is a company with an actual presence at both ends — people who already know which Denver buildings need a COI, which neighborhoods have alley access, and how the I-25 corridor runs at 7 a.m. on a Thursday. Full Service Moves
